Full Job Description

  • Maintain and support the continued development of the provision of elective and emergency orthopaedic surgery, working as a key member of the orthopaedic team.

  • Provide a comprehensive service to manage hand and wrist pathology.

  • Expand the current provision of hand and wrist elective activity.

  • Participate regularly in clinical governance activities and teaching.

    The post holder will have a dynamic personality, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, an interest in acute care, and the enthusiasm to further develop the hand and wrist service within the orthopaedic department., FRCS (Tr &Orth) or equivalent

  • You must be on the specialist register for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK.


  • In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee
  • Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise

  • ATLS Provider with current certificate, Relevant higher degree

  • Post Graduate Diploma in hand surgery (registered or completed)

  • ATLS Trainer

    Essential criteria
  • Sub-Specialty Fellowship level training in Upper limb surgery

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Trauma & Orthopaedics

  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinions on range of problems within the specialty

  • Wide based experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics

  • Understanding current issues within Trauma & Orthopaedics and the future direction of the specialty

  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS

  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions


  • Desirable criteria

    Attendance at a recognised management course, Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.,
  • Academic achievements / evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications

  • Training in clinical and educational supervision

  • Attendance at a teaching course

  • Formal qualification in teaching / education

    The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics comprises an enthusiastic and highly motivated team of consultants, who provide a variety of subspecialties as well as a general orthopaedic and trauma service.


  • We pride ourselves on our consultant delivered acute trauma management and elective orthopaedics. We are due to open our new state of the art theatres in December 2023 which will allow us to expand to 20 orthopaedic consultants and enable us to further grow our elective theatre service to reach more patients and improve waiting times.

    This expansion of our services creates the opportunity for a new hand and wrist surgeon to join the department. The job plan will include clinic and theatre sessions in Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw District General Hospital and Mexborough Monatagu Hospital., Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of Yorkshire's leading acute trusts, serving a population of more than 420,000 across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and the surrounding areas.
