Full Job Description

ETEL is a large and complex business encompassing (i) Retail - Kwik Fit, Tyre Pro's, Central Tyre, Kwik Fit Mobile and Kwik Fit Fleet brands, (ii) Stapleton's wholesale & distribution, (iii) Murfitt's tyre recycling, and (iv) ETEL Head Office functions e.g. Finance, People, Technology.

Reporting to the Data Platform Manager the Data Engineer will participate in data development processes, data modelling, data analysis and synthesis and will be responsible for ingesting data from different sources and transforming the data. In addition they will be responsible for the Tableau Platform setup and maintenance.

The Data Engineer will join a team establishing a new Data Platform for ETEL, working with other parts of the business to migrate data from legacy systems and establishing pipelines to move data from new applications to the data platform while adopting standard best practices. Starting with Stapleton's, as the platform is established and the programme progresses, the Data Engineering team will expand the platform across the ETEL group, bringing in new data sources from our other business streams including Kwik Fit, Central Tyres, Murfitt's, Fettle and ETEL head office functions (Finance, People, Property, etc).

During and following the programme the Data Engineer will participate in the development and adoption of the ETEL data environments across technical and associated business teams, responsible for ensuring that all relevant data is provisioned to our data lake and warehouse environments, data is accessible to other business applications, reporting and analytics teams, relevant data governance and security policies and procedures are applied to our data environments, and helping develop and deliver a future-proof data strategy, maintaining standards and best practices for data provisioning and data integration.

The role is based in Letchworth. All members of the Technology team are "Remote Workers", working in a hybrid capacity at home, the office or any other relevant location, depending on the needs of the business., The role will successfully design, implement, monitor and improve our data and BI reporting platforms to fulfil our business needs and meet our technical requirements. This will be achieved by these activities:

Requirement gathering and analysis

  • Working with stakeholders including data, design, product, and executive teams and assisting them with data-related technical issues

  • Own and develop relationships with specific third party suppliers, agreed with the Data Platform Manager


  • Design
  • Creating, designing, and developing data model

  • Develop conceptual/logical/physical data models

  • Contribute to the creation of activity and project plans, agreed with the Data Platform Manager


  • Implementation or coding
  • Build data pipelines for data throughout the Azure Data Platform stages, integrating data management best practices at all stages (Azure Synapse, PostgreSQL, ADF, Python)

  • Develop data sets which are optimised for their given use case, e.g. self-service analytics

  • Migrate data from legacy reporting solutions onto the Azure Data Platform, ensuring that data integrity and service levels are maintained

  • Automation of end-to-end data flows

  • Creation of data sets for analytics and data scientist team members


  • Testing
  • Testing and validation of data

  • Evaluate code and ensure the quality of all project deliverables

  • Performance testing of solution

  • Focus on business outcomes and the delivery of activities on time and to the required quality standards, agreed with the Data Platform Manager


  • Deployment
  • Follow the release management process as agreed with the Data Platform Manager

  • Design and implement an Agile work management approach

  • Manage code quality and security policies by adhering to best practices(GDPR)

  • Responsible for updating documentation such as data mapping and wiki's

  • Integration of Code (Azure DevOps)


  • Maintenance
  • Maintenance of Reference Data applications (e.g. Products MDM)

  • Participate in Change management processes and BAU

  • Out of hours on-call support required for escalated business critical issues

  • Monitoring and tuning data loads and queries

  • Monitor and maintain the data architecture (e.g., data layers)

  • Provide subject matter expertise to consumers

  • Create and manage the Tableau site's users and groups

  • Responsible for Tableau application maintenance

    Experience in Project Planning and Delivery

  • Experience in Tableau access management and application management

  • Experience working with enterprise data discovery, analytics, and BI software tools such as Tableau, PowerBI and others for semantic-layer-based data discovery.

  • Experience in enabling the BI self service capability for the organisation

  • Experience and knowledge of big data platforms and integrated analytics tools, such as Azure Synapse.

  • Strong ability to design, build and manage data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata, and workload management (Metadata Driven Ingestion).

  • Good working experience of database technologies and database integration, such as SQL, Postgres, MySQL or Oracle.

  • Experience in Python (PySpark)

  • Experience in working with DevOps capabilities like version control, automated builds, testing and release management capabilities using Microsoft DevOps and Git repositories.

  • Knowledge of data integration tools and API development, e.g Salesforce Mulesoft, Spectrum.

  • Good numerical and analytical skills, necessary for the daily analysis, trend compilation and evaluation of data across the organisation or via external data sources.

  • Experience in problem solving within a data platform environment.

  • Able to demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Highly motivated, energetic, thorough, detail oriented, and able to multi-task

  • Experience in supplier engagement / management


  • Professional Experience
  • More than three years experienced in data or technology roles, such as architecture, operations, and design related disciplines.

  • At least three years of experience in Azure (Azure Synapse, Azure Databricks, PySpark).

  • Comprehensive experience with data modelling

  • Experience across a range of other IT functional disciplines will be of benefit, including:

  • + Data Platform tools
    + CI/CD using Azure DevOps
    + IT Security practices
