The role of Lead Scenic is integral to ensuring the smooth running of Bakehouse Factory.

As a key member of the management team, we rely on you to be part of the drive and overall vision of Bakehouse and to always have the best interests of the business in mind. The organisation thrives on the collaboration of its core team to ensure everyone is working towards the common goal of producing high quality events within the time and budget available to us.

As a busy events company, Bakehouse Factory produces a large number of events per year. The Lead Scenic is responsible for the smooth running of the Scenic Department; ensuring that we are appropriately resourced and jobs are completed on time and on budget with the quality of finish Bakehouse is known for. Bakehouse produce a range of events during the year, some of which include making and scenic painting whilst some involve repurposing and refurbishing existing sets to send out again.

The role takes its workflow from the Production Manager and must be able to work autonomously and as part of a team to ensure Bakehouse assets are managed properly. During quieter periods this role will be working as a maker and painter themselves with a small amount of management of resources and time. During busy periods the role will need to manage a flexible team, recruiting and planning resources, scheduling and budgeting to ensure multiple projects are completed simultaneously.,

  • Provide a senior level of artistic knowledge to the workshop team with a range of industry contacts.

  • Supervise a team of scenic artists; managing their workflow and keeping them to schedule.

  • Resource plan and budget for the scenic department

  • Use your expertise to support the production department to quote for jobs.

  • Maintain a database of available scenic artists with a list of skill sets.

  • Use our scheduling system Float to schedule the team and ensure they produce timesheets to match.

  • Plan resources for jobs in a cost effective manner

  • Organise the purchase of resources for each project

  • Organise external contractors for jobs we cannot get done in house.

  • Manage the scenic budget for each project, reporting to the production manager with any concerns.

  • Have a broad skill set with experience in making and scenic painting to ensure the right expertise for each project whether that be yourself, or a freelance scenic artist.

  • Work closely with the lead carpenter and lead metalworker to ensure jobs move smoothly through the workshop.

  • Manage the workflow for the spraybooth

  • Act as quality control alongside the production manager and designer to ensure projects meet the expected standard before they go out.

  • Refurbish and repair old set and props to send out on future jobs.

    The ideal Lead Scenic would have experience working in the event and creative industries. This position requires the ability to confidently lead a team of scenics, delegate tasks and complete creative briefs with a combination of skill and enthusiasm.


  • Skills/Requirements:
  • Strong knowledge and experience of scenic painting and making including sculpting/moulding/textile work


  • Excellent understanding of materials, tools and the workshop environment


  • Sound knowledge of safety standards and procedures


  • The capability to work independently and effectively in a team to maintain contact across all departments


  • The ability to understand and manage budgets and work to deadlines.


  • The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with external suppliers


  • The ability to be resourceful and adaptable and able to solve problems


  • Excellent time management and organisational skills


  • A flair for working in a fast-paced creative environment
