Full Job Description

As a Mechanical & Electrical Fitter - Refurb & Site Support you will be required to live within a 1-hour commute of our refurb centre in Thorpe Marsh, Doncaster. The Mechanical & Electrical Fitter - Refurb & Site Support will assist the Production/Site Support Engineers providing both ET operations staff and contractors working on National Grid's behalf via instruction and practical assistance with the installation and commissioning of refurbished assets and the ongoing maintenance and fault repair of committee design switchgear, ABCB and SF6 GCB populations. You'll support the delivery of refurbishment programmes, assist with problem solving and support to the business and participate in assurance and audit related activities for the refurbishment centres ensuring continued operations and maintenance of accreditations. Working away from home when required on faults and refurbs assisting engineers and site staff on substation equipment, travel will be asked in advance and the
primary role will be in the workshops. When not out traveling across the network in England and Wales you will be expected to fulfil duties within the production environment of the refurbishment centres working on substation assets within the workshops.,

  • Provide technical support to ET Operations and contractors on the installation of refurbished assets

  • Provide technical support to ET Operations and contractors for ongoing maintenance and fault repair of committee design switchgear, ABCB and GCB

  • Ensure SF6 gas handling equipment is maintained/calibrated in accordance with the F gas regulations

  • Ensure refurbishment delivery standards are applied and maintained

  • Ensure continuous improvement methodologies are adopted

  • Participate in corporate audit reviews and external audits to maintain accreditations and operations

  • Review refurbishment delivery work specifications to ensure these meet quality and safety standards

  • Participate in investigations relating to refurbishment faults and defects

  • Participate in refurbishment R&D activities

  • Liaise with wider refurbishment, Engineering and Asset Management teams on refurbishment development, SOPs, work specifications and method statement

  • Essential:

  • A full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK

  • Engineering level 3 qualification or an equivalent recognised apprenticeship

  • Significant on the tools mechanical or electrical engineering experience

  • Experience of adhering to H&S regulations


  • Desirable:

  • Experience of working on substations

  • Experience of reading engineering drawings

  • Competitive salary between £35,000 - £39,000 per annum dependent on capability

  • Paid Overtime

  • Performance based bonus

  • 37 Hours per week 06:45 - 15:15 Monday to Thursday & 06:45 - 11:45 Friday
