Full Job Description

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join our group. You will lead by example and set the tone for our engineering culture. You will line manage a small team of software engineers at various stages in their career and will get to know the best ways to help individuals and teams succeed. You will be involved in the software development lifecycle putting on the relevant hats to unblock and ensure the team's success including, for example, deploying to and running our production environment. We use a customer-centric approach to provide solutions that enable the scientists and engineers we work with to provide an effective User Programme across multiple facilities. We collaborate and align our work with other teams across the division and in other facilities to make sure we develop and implement technologies effectively., UKRI seeks to ensure it creates and maintains a system of openness, fairness and inclusion - a collaborative, trusted environment, which is attractive to and accessible to everyone who is interested in developing their career with us.

You will have a degree, or equivalent, as well as experience in software development and experience/high potential for managing people effectively. You will show an initiative-taking approach to problem solving with excellent written and oral skills for effective communication. This role requires someone with good presentation skills who can explain broad technical concepts to both specialist and non-specialist audiences and who has a strong customer focus throughout. You will advocate for good practice in all our software development including maintenance., The below criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting (S) and Interview (I):

  • A Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant subject area (S)

  • Experience of line management including coaching and developing staff and managing performance (S&I)

  • Experience of developing high quality software with a good broad understanding of agile methodologies in software development. (S&I)

  • Highly organised with strong problem-solving abilities. (S&I)

  • High emotional intelligence to manage software engineers at different stages of their career including actively supporting their professional/career development. (I)

  • Good interpersonal skills, particularly in presenting complex and technical information appropriate to the audience. (I)
