Full Job Description

  • Responsible for the packing and storage of objects as part of a major storage move project, with a particular focus on archaeology.

  • This role is primarily technical. Problem solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential.

  • The post-holder will be expected to work at the Museum's off-site store, BM_ARC, near Reading.

  • Please note we are recruiting for 10 vacancies for this particular role.
    Key areas of responsibility:
  • To facilitate the movement, packing and rehousing of archaeological assemblages across the collections

  • To observe best practice in all aspects of object handling and collections storage

  • To facilitate the packing of objects for permanent storage (as required)

  • To monitor security of objects and to maintain them in good condition in storage.

  • To maintain and update essential object documentation, including location information and photography.

  • To follow Integrated Pest Management procedures

  • To assist with training and skill-sharing as required, including supervision of volunteers as required.

  • Good general education including GCSEs or equivalent.

  • Demonstrable interest in aspects of the Museum's collections.

  • Manual dexterity; IT skills; understanding and appreciation of materials and objects.

  • Ability to work well as part of team; self-motivated and able to use initiative; good communicator; good time management skills.

  • Maintaining a calm, approachable and professional manner in busy and demanding environments.

  • Manual dexterity and a degree of physical fitness are desirable to meet an occasionally physically demanding role, with some heavy lifting.

  • Practical experience of hand tools and workshop equipment and pallet trucks; experience of object photography; familiarity with databases; slinging and heavy lifting training; full UK driving licence; forklift licence (Desirable)
