Full Job Description

As an Associate CFD Engineer role you will be involved in the delivery of technical projects relating to surface ship and submarine hydrodynamic problems, identifying a methodology for solving a client's hydrodynamic issue using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), conducting the analysis, reporting results and recommending a proposed solution.

Projects are likely to include design and analysis of propulsors and control surfaces, manoeuvring simulation, cavitation modelling and fluid-structure interaction modelling.

  • You will be working on ship or submarine modelling, data analysis and report writing on a daily basis

  • You will be developing alternative strategies to overcome issues and innovate to add value to the customer

  • You will be presenting work in internal and external forums, including conferences and customer meetings


  • This role is full-time, 37-hours per week, and based at the Haslar site a minimum of 4 days a week.

  • Experience with a CFD package such as STAR-CCM+, ANSYS CFX, Fluent or OpenFoam is required

  • Good knowledge of data analysis including experience of programming using Matlab, Python or similar programming tools

  • A general understanding of hydrodynamic principles

  • Please note that many roles in QinetiQ are subject to national security vetting. Applicants that already hold the appropriate level of vetting may be able to transfer it upon appointment, subject to approval. A number of roles are also subject to restrictions on access to information that mean factors such as nationality, previous nationalities held and the country in which you were born may have an effect on the roles that you can be employed in.

  • BEng in Naval Architecture, Aeronautical Engineering or a similar field as a minimum

  • An MSc or PhD in a relevant field is highly desirable

  • We are open to applicants coming straight from education if there area of study is highly relevant.
