Full Job Description

Due to a high volume of work won by the business, we are seeking a skilled structural engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil & structural engineering with a focus on structural design and analysis. You will be responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the construction of various infrastructure projects, ensuring they are safe by design, compliant with the relevant engineering, quality, and regulatory standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Structural Design: Design and analyse structures such as bridges, buildings, foundations, and other infrastructure projects using engineering principles and software tools. Experience in Eurocodes & British Standards is useful.


  • Design Project Coordination: Develop project design plans, including schedules and resource allocation where required, ensuring projects are completed on time and on budget. Manage sub-consultants where required and lead / attend multi-disciplined engineering meetings to ensure coordination throughout design stages.


  • Technical Calculations: Perform structural calculations, simulations, and analysis to assess the integrity and performance of structural members, considering a wide range of permanent or variable load cases based on utility specifications and standards relevant to specific clients.


  • Regulatory & Technical Compliance: Ensure designs comply with relevant building codes, regulations, and industry standards, obtaining necessary permits and approvals from regulatory authorities where required. Liaison with project architects and planning consultants where required. Liaison with project stakeholders where technical approvals are required.


  • Collaboration: Work closely with Electrical Engineering teams, construction teams, and stakeholders to coordinate project requirements, address design challenges, and resolve technical issues.


  • Site Inspections: Conduct site visits to inspect construction progress, assess structural integrity, and provide technical guidance to construction teams, ensuring compliance with design specifications. Where appropriate, act as Principal Designer where appointed by the client.


  • Documentation: Prepare technical reports, drawings, and documentation to communicate design concepts, specifications, and recommendations to clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies. Utilise document controllers within the teams and ensure BIM innovation is utilised where practicable.


  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in civil engineering and structural design, contributing to the continuous improvement of processes and methodologies. Progress with Professional Registration if required and maintain CPD. Lead on 2 CPD workshop sessions for the wider team per year.


  • Safety: Develop, contribute and where required, manage designer risk assessments and project hazard elimination management lists to ensure design risks are minimized but also captured in the construction stages.

    Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field. Master's degree preferred.

  • Professional Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred with IET or ICE however applications will be considered if the individual is working towards this and has a robust portfolio already.

  • Proven experience in structural design, analysis, and design project management for major construction projects

  • Experience would be beneficial within electricity substation environments or major water pipelines.

  • Proficiency in civil / structural engineering software such as AutoCAD, Revit, TEKLA, TEDDS or similar.

  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of relevant building codes, regulations, and industry standards and robust understanding of application of such standards where required.
