Full Job Description

We are looking to recruit a Fleet Duty Supervisor on a Fixed Term Contract until the end of April 2025. The role will report into the Fleet Duty Manager and will support in the operation of Gosforth Depot, taking the lead responsibility for S&T equipment and support the overall production team. The role is based on a 24-hour, 7-day roster inclusive of Bank Holidays and weekends.,

  • Carry out preventative maintenance programmes on a variety of rolling stock and Depot infrastructure repairs/maintenance. Programmes include duty checks, inspections according to examination sheets, component changes and overhaul of various rolling stock parts - where trained assessed and deemed competent

  • Adopt a flexible approach to work practises and a 'Competence based skills' approach to work completion i.e. do what trained, assessed and deemed competent to do to provide full flexibility based upon competence and skills provided.

  • Investigate faults on voltages ranging from 1500V dc down to electronics voltages will be required.

  • Take responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the full range of S&T equipment - both train-borne and infrastructure related such as points, loud phone etc.

  • Carry out fault investigations on S&T, electrical, pneumatic and other components as required/instructed in line with core discipline.

  • Refurbishment and modification of rolling stock including replacement and upgrading of components and systems.

  • Comply with all relevant safety rules, Work instructions, Safe Systems of Works and Fleet Duty Managers/Team Leaders/Engineers instructions.

  • Respond to in service breakdowns and also take part in a 'first response situation' should emergencies in service arise.

  • Safely train Apprentices and other staff members on the full range of their duties as required/instructed.

  • Assist in the preparation of Safe Systems of Work, Rule Changes, Risk Assessments and carry out Safety Management checks as required.

  • Assist non-Engineering Group staff in duties carried out on rolling stock or in Gosforth Depot.

  • Compile accurate examination sheets, modification records, and other relevant documentation - utilising appropriate IT systems or relevant paper based documents.

  • Carry out component overhauls as instructed, when trained and deemed competent to do so.

  • Carry out any duties trained and deemed competent to perform e.g. drive Metro cars/Locos and Fork Lift trucks when needed, as part of duties.

  • Participate in integrated teams when performing electro-mechanical equipment changes on Metro cars, involving multi-skilling.

  • Other duties e.g. slinging and movement of equipment as required.

  • Contribute to Depot upkeep and take responsibility for cleanliness and environmental obligations on the Depot.

  • Participate in any Service Quality Regime work that may be required.

  • Carry out any tasks as shown in the attached Skills Matrix where the Technician is trained and deemed competent.

  • Perform leadership and management duties of Shift personnel in accordance with the directive of the Fleet Duty Manager / Heavy Production Manager or alternative management authority. This includes deputising for the Fleet Duty Manager whenever deemed necessary.

  • Work a roster offering 24 hours, 7-day cover including Bank Holidays and weekends where required.

  • Fleet Duty Supervisor, assisting Fleet Duty Manager.

  • Primarily be based at Gosforth Depot but will work on the system in Emergency situations to facilitate the recovery/repair of Metro cars/Locos etc.

  • Safety critical role and as such is required to adhere to all rules regarding safety critical including work time directive, working under the influence of drink/drugs etc.


  • Core:
  • Responsible for managing those elements of the safety management system allocated to the Engineering Directorate for the safe operation of Metro and associated projects.

  • Responsible for carrying out duties and ensuring procedures are in place to meet legislative and company standards requirements for the Engineering Directorate functions.

    BTEC HNC or approved equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.

  • Experience of working with voltages of 110vDC/415AC/1500vDC.

  • Experience of Electronics.

  • Able to plan and prioritise workload.

  • Strong planning and organisational skills.

  • Experience of IT systems and hardware including maintenance/repair.

  • Able to carry out fault investigations.

  • Able to overhaul electro-mechanical equipment.

  • Communicate effectively

  • Work productively as part of a team

  • Knowledge of Health & Safety

  • Meet the required medical standard


  • Desirable:
  • Knowledge & experience of fault finding, maintenance and installation in signalling systems i.e.: Safety Signalling Route Relay Interlocking. Train Bourne Positive Train Identification and Train Bourne Automatic Train stop Systems. Experience of maintenance and fault finding of Communications equipment and systems in a safety critical environment.

  • Demonstrate the ability to learn new systems.

  • Hold a full current Driving Licence.

  • Experience of computers.

  • Installation experience/qualification.

  • Report writing skills.

  • Basic Health and Safety qualification.
