Full Job Description

The primary purpose of this role is to professionally support and undertake Mechanical trades operations and maintenance work across the Trust's sites as directed by line management. This includes activities that may be demanding and/or non-routine, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards, policies and procedures. Assist with the management and implementation of the planned engineering/building maintenance programmes for the Trust to ensure compliance with key standards, both legislative and performance related (as defined through Service Level Agreement) - also meeting where necessary the requirements of the NHSLA.,

  • Work in accordance with the requirements of HTM's, HBN's, British Standards, Model Specifications and all Statutory Regulations, Codes of Practice and Trust Policies and Procedures, identifying and proposing changes for own work area to the Mechanical Team Leader

  • Prioritise work requirements on essential facilities which could have a direct detrimental impact on the patient experience e.g. nurse call handsets, patient toilets/wash facilities and patient beds. The role involves prioritising and being able to react to changing workloads

  • Contribute to the development, implementation and review of the Trust's Estates plans and work closely with the other Estates Managers/team Leaders in the development of works programmes

  • Assist with the set up and Implementation/management of the Estates safe systems of work (e.g. Permit to Work, isolation procedures) under the guidance of AP's to ensure that all safe systems of work are carried out correctly

  • Plan maintenance works, including liaison with users and contractors

  • Supervise maintenance assistants and operational estates contractors, allocating tasks/re-prioritising where necessary, and ensuring the quality of specification and workmanship

  • Liaise with the Estates Helpdesk when receiving emergency works and service complaints

  • Act on own initiative and advise senior staff of implications of technical issues when attending site on call outs

  • Actively participate in the wider team operation and control of planned maintenance schemes., The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

    HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering

  • Recognised and registered EITB, City & Guilds, modern apprenticeship, NVQ level 4 or approved equivalent training in Mechanical/Engineering or Plumbing.

  • Demonstrable in-depth knowledge and experience within the required technical disciplines (e.g. BMS, decontamination, heating, domestic water services, ventilation etc.)


  • Desirable criteria

  • Trained in Health & Safety, i.e. NEBOSH, IOSH, First Aid etc

  • Registration with approved organisations, i.e. UK Register of Electricians, JIB Schemes, Gas Safe, etc.

  • Member of relevant healthcare or engineering institutes, i.e. IHEEM, HEFMA, CIBSE, IET etc

  • Experience across several of the HTM's acting as either a CP or AP

  • Efficiency improvement training, i.e. Lean / Six Sigma, Knowledge of maintenance methodologies

  • Knowledge of HTM's, HBN's and Estates specific legislation

  • Specialist knowledge gained from working in a health care engineering environment or prepared to work towards gaining

  • Must be multi-skilled in Mechanical Trades

  • Experience of working within and developing a 'safe system of work', Experience in working in a similar role

  • Previous experience of working with a quality management system (e.g. ISO 9001)

  • Good knowledge of energy efficient working practices within engineering

  • Experience of creating and giving presentations to varied group of internal and external stakeholders, Highly organised

  • Able to work independently and exercise a high degree of professional judgement

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Able to apply the knowledge, experience and judgement necessary to demonstrate, in a practical sense, the safe operation and maintenance of specific systems/equipment

  • Able to demonstrate the analytical skills and judgement required to identify/diagnose a range of defects and failures in relation to specific systems/equipment and what actions to take, where the information sources may be complicated and/or conflicting

  • Ability to make sound judgements with regard to operational safety when in lone worker situation or when put under pressure by the situation or other workers

  • Ability to Plan and organise in coordination with contractors unsupervised routine and complex maintenance, analysis, solution finding and repair work

  • Ability to analyse data using computer-based data entry systems and software packages

  • Ability to supervise others, monitor their work and carry out training as necessary

  • Proactive, self-motivated

  • Ability to carry out electrical inspection and testing

  • Ability to carry out repairs to complex steam plant

  • Ability to interpret, adjust and monitor various BMS systems

  • Committed to improving efficiency and environmental protection., Able to use small tools and carry out fine adjustments to building services on a regular basis

  • Able to carry out routine and emergency maintenance on engineering and building systems on a routine basis

  • Able to concentrate on complex issues and work with detailed information
