Full Job Description

This is a newly created role to support continuous improvement activities in the Fast Prototype Processing Area (FPP) within Element 6's Global Innovation Centre (GIC)

The GIC is Element 6's flagship site focusing on developing revolutionary products and innovative processes for superhard materials.

The Heavy Test area prepares and tests Polycrystalline diamond bulk materials suitable for mining and drilling applications.

Work pieces progress through a number of different test protocols to explore their abrasion, thermal and impact resistance properties.

This is a hands on role, focusing on the testing of work pieces while maintaining and improving upon current area lead times. The role will also involve the maintaining of existing equipment as well as working with R&D partners to improve testing practices.

The successful candidate will be working in a varied role across all business units and product groups, liaising with both local R&D and production plants around the world.

As an Operator, primary responsibilities include:

  • Day to day operation of vertical turret lathes (VTL). It is expected that up to 80% of the role will be spent operating production equipment.

  • Working a flexible 8 hours working day

  • Quality control of test pieces.

  • Work with shop floor management systems to monitor KPI's.

  • Monitor machine condition and behavior, conduct maintenance and support in fault finding.

  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement activities, document processes and contribute to safe systems of work.

  • Using lean techniques, identify opportunities for improvement within current processes.

  • Drive lead time reduction.

  • Develop new testing techniques using both new and existing equipment.

  • Introduction of Industry 4.0 standards and methodologies to production systems.


  • Support the area supervisor in leading the team practically and in demonstration of the E6 values.

    No previous experience in this industry is necessary but any machining experience would be advantageous.

    Candidates must be able to work in a methodical manner, following established procedures with a right first time approach and attention to detail.

  • be comfortable working with MS Office tools, Excel in particular.

  • This role would suite a candidate looking to develop new skills and gain experience in an engineering environment, whilst opening avenues for further potential career progression within the company., Successful candidates will be required to complete a background screening check which may include a criminal check and validation of qualifications.
