Full Job Description

We are looking for oyster farm operatives to join us at Seasalter where our oyster farm operates in the inter tidal zone.
Our small team ensures the smooth running of the oyster farm through laying the seed to removal, grading and packing of oysters to and from the beds efficiently with the use of all-terrain vehicles and a purpose-built boat. Previous experience of oyster farming is not required as all training will be given. This is a physically demanding job which will require strength and stamina to repetitively lift and work with oyster bags.,

  • Using weather and tidal predictions effectively to ensure all deadlines are met and to ensure safety of crew and equipment.

  • Working in all weather conditions outside for long periods of time. Ensuring PPE is used when required, including use of PFDs and thermal clothing.

  • Using every spring tide available to ensure orders are met on time. Tide work can involve very early morning starts and on occasion, it is necessary to use two tides in one day resulting in long days. Spring tides vary in length so working weeks can be sometimes be 7-12 days long and can include weekends and bank holidays.

  • To adopt a flexible approach to working hours to ensure the viability of the oyster farm (this includes the working pattern, public bank holidays and weekends)

  • Undertake training as deemed appropriate to your role.

  • Follow protocol in maintaining in good working order all vehicles, trailers and equipment.

  • Maintenance of oyster beds through removal of disused equipment. Maintenance of grounds and buildings as required.

  • Ensuring all shipments of oysters are collected promptly and handled carefully.

  • Collection, emptying, grading, re- bagging and re-laying of oysters bags effectively and efficiently.

  • Sampling of oysters to analyse productivity and mortality to ensure excellent record keeping of stock.

  • Clear concise labelling of stock and packing of oysters for international shipments.

  • Ensuring safety of the public as well as staff during loading and unloading of stock and equipment. After training you may be required in the loading by use of a telescopic all-terrain forklift.

  • Safe use and maintenance of small water craft for access to the large oyster boat.

  • Safe launching and recovery of oyster boat, and loading and unloading of boat under strict timeframes due to tides.

  • Use own initiate and problem-solving skills in overcoming obstacles and changes in weather or tides.
